Heliotrope
Heliotrope (diurnal motion in response to the sun’s movement) is a video installation that moves between still image and motion, balancing photography and film. Annechien Steenhuizen was asked to imitate three photographs from 1960 depicting Karin Kraaykamp, one of the first television presenters and among the earliest recognizable faces of Dutch television.
By placing these images side by side, the work connects two moments in media history: the early days of television and the present, in which media images are omnipresent. Heliotrope reflects on the viewer’s fascination with famous faces and on the way attention is drawn and held through the interplay of stillness and movement. Like sunflowers turning toward the sun.
